Murals, cultural celebrations and screening events - Euro 2025 fund projects announced

The 16 projects that will share a £1 million support fund to celebrate Cymru women's first-ever European championship footballing appearance have been announced.

The projects selected include screening events across Wales and the world; football engagement activities for young people; training and support packages for female coaches and referees; and cultural celebrations.

The purpose of the fund is to support projects that will promote Wales, project our values, particularly around equality and inclusion, and promote women’s sport, encouraging increased participation and creating a positive and lasting legacy.

Among the projects receiving funding are:

  • Two inclusive, one-day street football tournaments for women.
  • A dedicated Women's Coaching Network and a campaign to dramatically increase the number of women and girls in football refereeing.
  • Murals in communities where Cymru players were born and began their football journeys.
  • Internationally focused classroom resources for primary schools across Wales and beyond to promote language learning, international collaboration, and engage pupils in women's football.
  • A poet-in-residence to accompany the Welsh football team during their campaign to record and celebrate the team's journey.
  • An international programme celebrating Welsh culture on a global stage including performances and workshops by female Welsh artists in Switzerland.

Foundation 4 Sports Coaching

The F4SC initiative aims to leverage the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 to dismantle barriers that hinder the participation of young women, particularly those from Wales's oldest Somali, Yemeni, and South Asian communities, in football.

Addressing cultural taboos, religious concerns, and the lack of inclusive spaces in sport, the project will challenge stereotypes and celebrate multiculturalism, proving that football can align with cultural and religious values.

The initiative includes gender-inclusive football camps, community workshops, role model development through FAW-accredited coaching and refereeing courses, pre-tournament football festivals, and inclusive fan zones.

By engaging families and communities, creating safe playing spaces, and normalising female leadership in football, the F4SC project seeks to foster long-term participation among BAME women and girls, strengthening the bond between football, culture, and Welsh identity, and leaving a truly inclusive legacy from UEFA Women's Euro 2025.

Afrowales - OTID Entertainment

£60,000

Cymru Unleashed is an empowering initiative celebrating Wales Women’s UEFA Euro 2025 by fostering sports participation among girls and marginalized communities.

Through community sports events, art installations, and a bilingual digital campaign, this project aims to inspire cultural pride and secure a lasting legacy.

Key activities include sports workshops, pop-up exhibitions co-created with local artists, and a VR experience to promote Wales globally.

The project prioritizes equality and inclusion, striving to achieve significant engagement from underrepresented groups, and is poised to deliver sustainable benefits through annual events and accessible digital archives.

Bath Uni (Grange Pavilion)

£14,000

The multi-actor project aims to engage young people from Cardiff’s southern arc in the Euro 2025 celebrations.

This project seeks to use Euro 2025 as a platform to increase engagement in football (both playing and fandom) among Cardiff’s Global Majority youth.

Activities include delivering football sessions at local primary schools and Grange Pavilion, advertising accessible football teams and training, screening Cymru’s first Euro 2025 match with related activities, launching a Global Majority fan group for attending WNT/MNT matches, and creating fan merchandise like hijabs and bucket hats.

Additionally, the project will run a promotional campaign around global majority inclusion in Welsh football, collaborating with Iby World and Creative Circle.

Literature Wales

£15,000

This project aims to appoint a poet-in-residence to accompany the Welsh football team during their EURO 2025 campaign. The chosen poet will record and celebrate the team's journey, utilizing social media platforms to engage audiences.

The focus will be on identifying a female poet who is passionate about Welsh football and can reach diverse audiences. The legacy of this project includes promoting women's football, Welsh values, and inspiring young people to read and write poetry.

Wales Arts International

£130,000

The Team Cymru International Cultural Programme aims to celebrate Welsh culture on a global stage during the Euros 2025. The programme includes performances and workshops by female Welsh artists in Switzerland, promoting collaboration with Swiss artists. In Wales, the initiative will develop a Cultural Values statement, partner with Gŵyl Cymru to connect national and international activities, and create a mural art football pitch honouring one of Wales’ well-known players. A digital campaign led by Orchard will capture content from both Wales and Switzerland, to be used for broader and international campaigns such as Euros 2028.

Gwyl Wal Goch

£13,000

This project will create a short film about two sisters who became Wales’s first female Muslim referees and coaches.  The film will follow the sisters on and off the pitch allowing them and their friends to tell their story. It will explore the barriers they encountered/encounter, how their family and community reacted, if they can inspire others, and if football can change perceptions of religion, women and culture?

The film will be screened to girls and boys, youths and adults in community settings and at football clubs across Wales.  The film will allow young people particularly, to challenge their own preconceptions about who can do what in today’s Wales. The film will also be an ongoing educational asset for schools, colleges and the FAW to use to discuss questions of diversity and inclusion in our national game.  

Urdd

£100,000

This project aims to celebrate and inspire the women of Wales through a series of events and campaigns based on the Women's Euros 2025. The Euros Jamboree is a national event involving 250,000 school children across Wales, with every primary school participating. The Euros Anthem is an ambitious project featuring young and professional artists to create a song that inspires the nation to support Wales. Gwerin #LikeAGirl showcases contemporary folk talent from young girls of the Urdd in collaboration with the 8yth project in Switzerland. The Euros Sports Festival celebrates women's football and Welsh culture by rebranding the Urdd's national girls' football competition in Aberystwyth. Finally, Ambassadors/Legacy #LikeAGirl will host a visit of #LikeAGirl ambassadors for the G50 leadership and sports event in Switzerland and will host a one-day national #LikeAGirl conference in Wales in October 2025.

FAW

£150,000

To bolster the development of women's coaching in Wales, the FAW will implement a comprehensive strategy that includes the creation of a dedicated Women's Coaching Network, facilitating connection and support among female coaches. This will be reinforced by targeted Women's Coaching Network Workshops, providing valuable learning and development opportunities. The FAW will also offer subsidised coaching course fees to remove financial barriers, and deliver Women's Only/Female Game Courses, tailored to the specific needs and nuances of coaching within the women's game. Together, these initiatives will cultivate a generation of highly skilled female coaches, establishing a sustainable foundation for the future of women's football.

The Women’s Referee Campaign is a targeted initiative designed to dramatically increase the number of women and girls participating in football refereeing across Wales. It aims to achieve this by creating a supportive and visible pathway into refereeing, addressing common barriers like lack of confidence and perceived inaccessibility.

The FAW’s cultural engagement programme linked to UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, will celebrate the Cymru national team and the vibrant Welsh arts, artists and culture that showcases support for the team across Welsh communities. It will include:

·       Murals in communities where Cymru players were born and began their football journeys, celebrating their grassroots origins and the communities that raised the history makers.

·       Installations across cities in Wales to celebrate this historic moment and the importance of building a legacy that grows the women and girls’ game, from participants to volunteers to supporters.

·       Collaboration with Welsh artists and organisations to create unique cultural projects tied to the tournament and Cymru’s games.

·       Celebration of iconic Welsh landscapes aligned to celebration of iconic Welsh players.

·       Support in hosting creative and cultural celebrations in support of the Cymru national team.

·       Promotion of details of murals, installations and activations across FAW channels to encourage attendance and engagement.

The programme will foster a lasting legacy by embedding cultural storytelling into the tournament experience, reinforcing national pride and identity.

British Council

£60,000

The British Council, in partnership with Football Association Wales, will develop an internationally focused classroom resource, supporter packs, and accompanying webinars for primary schools across Wales and beyond.

This initiative aims to promote language learning, international collaboration, and engage pupils in women's football, particularly in line with the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025.  The classroom resource will align with the new Curriculum for Wales’ purposes, be inspired by the countries participating in the EUROs, and include links to the British Council's partner finding tool.

Additionally, FAW will provide School Engagement Supporter Packs and School Equipment Packs to inspire young people to follow and support Cymru, creating meaningful opportunities for continued participation in FAW programmes and football in schools.

The project aims to demonstrate the importance of intercultural skills and multilingualism in opening doors to global careers, empowering girls, and embedding girls' football provision in schools across Wales.

Boys' and Girls' Clubs of Wales

£43,000

The “Her Goal” project, a collaborative initiative between Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of Wales, the Coalfield Regeneration Trust, and Challenge Wales. Designed to celebrate UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, this programme empowers young people, particularly young women and girls, through football and other activities. Comprising five dynamic elements, “Her Goal” offers community parties, football activity days, inclusivity-driven disability football events, empowering sailing experiences, and international youth exchanges.

Promoting Welsh values of community and equality, this project aims to foster lasting participation, community cohesion, and opportunities for young women in sport and beyond.

S4C

£150,000

S4C, as the national broadcaster, will lead an ambitious project in Switzerland to promote Wales and the Welsh language during the Euro 2025 Championship.

The project will have two main goals:

·       To establish a central location for everyone to come together and enjoy the games while hosting events to promote Wales.  It will create an 'on the spot' mood in Switzerland that helps the team, fans, stakeholders and guests/audiences new to Wales to celebrate our nation. The aim is to bring stakeholders and audiences together to celebrate Wales the day before the first game of the championship, through a corporate and cultural event.

·       To nurture female talent in sports broadcasting by offering support, training and work experience opportunities.  The project will be led by S4C, working with its strong connections in the television sector and beyond.

Alaw Cyf

£50,000

The proposal for Euro 2025 includes curated watch-parties in community venues, incorporating arts activities during the day and female-led gigs in the evenings, centred around Cymru matches in the Euros. Each first-round game will be hosted in three venues across Wales (south, mid/west, and north), changing for each game to ensure a broad reach, totalling nine venues.

Cultural events in community centres, pubs, arts centres, and grassroots football clubs will also be supported to ensure widespread celebration of the arts and Cymru's female footballers.

Ashoka

£80,000

Ashoka UKI's "Changemakers in Women's Football: A Gender Equity Accelerator for Inspiring Future Generations" will harness UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 to drive systemic change in Welsh Women's football and beyond (96 countries where Ashoka is fully present).

By convening key stakeholders, Askoka will create a gender-equity framework that influences policy, governance, leadership and grassroots initiatives globally. The project will blend high impact storytelling with youth empowerment and system transformation.

The project will:

·       Position Wales as a global leader in gender equity in sport - influencing governance, media, and grassroots.

·       Showcase women’s football role models through a Changemaker Film Series. 

·       Engage young people through ‘Football & Changemaking’ Hack Labs, fostering leadership and participation.

·       Establish policy commitments in Welsh football structures, and beyond.

·       Increase female participation in football.

Clwb Creative Cymru

£10,000

Curated by Clwb Creative Cymru, Refresh/Retold is a groundbreaking cultural event designed to amplify Welsh creativity, and this event will celebrate and bring awareness to the Wales women’s team’s participation in the Euros.

Hosted in London, this celebratory takeover will spotlight pioneering female creatives and athletes who are reshaping the narrative of Wales and through sport, film, photography, music, and thought leadership.

The event will be hosted ahead of the first Wales game on 5th July to drive excitement and engagement around the game, and ensuring the day feels truly momentous outside of Wales.

Refresh/Retold will contribute to a long-term legacy of increased visibility, participation, and representation for women in sport and the arts. Th e aim of the initiative is to drive social change, increase awareness, and inspire the next generation of girls to participate in sport-ensuring a lasting legacy beyond Euro 2025.

Active North Wales

£50,000

A series of activities promoting physical movement using the power of football and the success of the Welsh National team qualifying for Euro 2025.The programme of activities will complement our existing plans across the 6 local authorities in North Wales. This adopts a place based whole system approach to tackling persistent inequalities faced in specific communities.

The programme will deliver celebratory festivals in 12 locations in North Wales (2 per local authority).  These festivals will adopt a whole system approach engaging with local partners to support the activity. Led by our Actif North Wales locality teams across the region supported by partners from the local authority and 3rd sector including Sports Clubs and community groups.

Working collectively to understand the challenges and barriers people living there face, as well as local strengths and opportunities, Active North Wales will co-develop a plan to support the communities become more active.

Street Football Wales

£45,000

The Inclusive Women’s Street Football Project, initiated by Street Football Wales, aims to deliver two inclusive, one-day street football tournaments for women in either Haverfordwest, Wrexham, and Cardiff, in alignment with UEFA Women’s Euro 2025. This initiative seeks to enhance access to football for women from diverse backgrounds, promote physical activity, foster social inclusion, and nurture confidence. The project will establish weekly community football sessions to ensure long-term engagement, creating sustainable pathways for women into local football clubs and structured participation. This effort aspires to leave a lasting legacy for women’s football in Wales, embedding long-term opportunities for active and inclusive participation.
